Nu ik weer pijnvrij door het leven huppel (alles lacht me toe, ik lach terug, konijntjes, confetti, sterren en bloemen overal!) kan ik weer echt dingen gaan ondernemen en dat is fijn: zo geef ik nog enigszins iets van betekenis aan mijn leven. Dat klinkt vrij zwaar en zwart, maar ik ben vast niet de enige die het soms zo voelt: sterker nog, ik denk dat er heel weinig mensen zijn die het anders voelen. Ik heb een paar stokpaardjes en daarvan zal ik er zo langzamerhand een paar aan jullie voorleggen: de mensen die mij goed kennen zullen er intussen stapelgek van worden, maar ik wil graag dingen begrijpen en dat lukt me lang niet altijd. De grootste vraag voor mij is waarom mensen in deze tijd nog kinderen nemen. Ik weet intussen wel dat er echt nog niemand is geweest die me heeft kunnen overtuigen van het feit dat kinderen leuk, nuttig of weet-ik-veel-wat zijn.
Als voorbeeld: een zaterdag op een voetbalvereniging. Bij aankomst staat er een snotneus zijn moeder uit te schelden (ik schat het ventje op zeven, maximaal), lopen er drie jengelend naar een auto om een uitwedstrijd te gaan spelen, gooit er eentje voor de lol een paar fietsen om en vechten er onderweg van de parkeerplaats naar het veld een stuk of 628 met elkaar. Leuk joh, kinderen.
Kijk, vroeger waren wij onderontwikkeld en was er geen sociaal zekerheidstelsel. Oftewel: kinderen waren nodig om voor je te zorgen op je oude dag. Daarvoor nog was het puur evolutionair gedreven: plant je zaad in een vrouw (of eigenlijk: in zoveel mogelijk vrouwen) om ervoor te zorgen dat je bloedlijn wordt gecontinueerd (dat is wat beesten nog steeds doen). Het gevolg daarvan waren inderdaad kinderen, die op hun beurt er weer voor zorgden dat de bloedlijn werd doorgezet.
Het mooie nu is: beide voorbeelden gaan niet meer op. Er is tegenwoordig een prima zorgstelsel (ik zal binnenkort ook nog wel eens beginnen over mijn kijk op de vergrijzing) voor de ouderen met AOW en pensioenregelingen en de evolutionaire drang zijn we al veel langer kwijt: intussen zijn we zo ver doorontwikkeld dat de drang van voorplanten wel weg is (of zou moeten zijn), de paar uitzonderingen met psychische aandoeningen daargelaten. Dus waarom nemen mensen nog kinderen?
Mijn antwoorden zijn heel simpel: voor eigen bestwil en vanwege sociale druk, waarbij de eerste heel erg overheerst. De tweede, sociale druk, is omdat men niet beter weet, dit zijn de sociale conventies waar iedereen zich aan moet houden: je werkt je te pletter, je hebt een man of vrouw, je hebt een huis en je neemt kinderen, het liefste twee of drie. Iedereen die anders doet of beslist, is vreemd. Simpel gedacht, maar zo werkt het echt. Qua eigen bestwil: de gang van zaken in een relatie is als volgt te omschrijven: de eerste twee jaar neuk je je een slag in de rondte, is alles nog leuk en test je elkaar op waar de grenzen getrokken worden. Daarna ga je twee tot drie jaar op verre vakanties, doe je dingen die je lastiger kan doen met kleine kinderen (oftewel: het zit al in het gedachtengoed) en denk je vooral aan anderen als je nog één a twee keer seks hebt in de week. Dan na een jaar of vijf-zes is de tijd daar: je zit met elkaar op de bank, kijkt elkaar nog eens aan en eigenlijk is je relatie op: je hebt alles samen gedaan, alles samen gezien, je kent elk plekje van elkaar, één keer in de twee weken naar de bioscoop is het ook niet meer en De Vrienden Van Amstel Live (jullie favoriete uitje want je kan even gek doen een avond) is maar één keer per jaar.
De oplossing is simpel: een kind!! Jullie zijn direct verzekerd van minstens achttien jaar bezigheidstherapie, dus alle verveling is weg! De perfecte oplossing: het kind kan altijd in de spotlight staan, er zijn geen smoezen meer nodig om dingen af te zeggen en je eigen (saaie) leven kan totaal worden opgeofferd voor het kind. Alle mensen knikken ook instemmend toe, dit is zoals het hoort. Maar is dat nou echt nog zo in het heden? Eigenlijk zijn we als mens toch allemaal zeer egocentrisch geworden? Een individualistische maatschappij, zeker in de westerse wereld. Hoe raar is het dan dat je je eigen welzijn opgeeft voor dat van een ander wezen?
Ik krijg vaak te horen: jij weet niet hoe het voelt, je moet het ervaren. Wat ik dan zelden uitgelegd krijg is het feit dat ik het niet HOEF te ervaren: ik leef één keer en wil graag mijn eigen beslissingen blijven nemen, zonder dat daar iemand van afhankelijk is. Ik besef me tegelijk dat dat gedachtengoed kennelijk juist het vreemdere is: je krijgt er namelijk heel veel voor terug! Slapeloze nachten, stress, teleurstelling en ga zo maar door, ja! Maar nogmaals: ik ben de gek. Laatst zei een goede vriend nog tegen me dat hij twee oprecht gelukkige stellen van mijn leeftijd die écht gelukkig zijn kent en dat leven van die eerste vier-vijf jaar hebben volgehouden: twee stellen zonder kinderen. Ik begrijp het niet, mensen begrijpen mij niet, dat moet ik dan maar leren begrijpen. Ik weet het, ik ben niet normaal, dit gedachtengoed is dat ook niet, maar zo zit ik er wel in.
